The Heavens Declare

What you see between the sun and the mountains—those are clouds. This was taken from a mountain at an elevation of about 5,000 ft (1,500 m). The clouds were at my eye level.

I swear the very breath of God was rustling the trees that night. The night was still, the air cool against my skin. On the huge balcony at our cousin Justine’s home in the North, I rested my head on the blue cushions of a porch swing. Nighttime electricity is hard to come by, but the light from a few homes scattered across the mountainside miles ahead of us.

In spite of the lack of electricity, the night shone brightly. I couldn’t imagine why. Our electricity had long since gone out, and the homes around us were just as dark. Then, I noticed a light shining atop the mountain across the valley.

“Here comes the moon,” Justine said.

“No way that’s the moon. The moon isn’t that bright!” I replied.

“It’s definitely the moon, just watch.”

Sure, Justine, that’s the moon. What an imagination! I thought to myself.

I was proved so wrong. The next thing I knew, the light over the mountain was growing bigger and brighter by the second.

That’s no street lamp, I thought.

The moon began to appear. It looked as if it was flying. Sending a glow that lit our side of the valley, it soared up into the sky, and within 5 minutes, it had risen.

Have you ever had such a clear view of the horizon that you could see the moon rise? Have you driven along the highway and watched the sun sink beneath the sea or were so high on a mountain that the clouds were at your eye level? Have you seen mountains jutting out of the ocean with such majesty that your breath was taken from you? I have now.

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above declares His handiwork—day to day pours out speech and night to night reveals knowledge. (Psalm 19:1)
